Fertile grazing land for over 100 years prior and now the site of Jackalope Hotel, the 11-hectare LL Vineyard was planted in 1989. Surrounded by ocean on three sides and with a cool maritime climate, Rare Hare Wines are a pure expression of site. Winemaker Geraldine McFaul’s understanding of the terroir and its subtleties is instinctive, while her careful and complementary handling creates expressive wines.
Under the expert hands of original viticulturists Robbie O’Leary and Ant Davenport, LL Vineyard’s fruit is hand-tended, block by block for pruning, canopy management, yield control and harvest. The vineyard consistently produces fruit of excellent quality, lending itself to minimal intervention and manipulation in the winery.
The Rare Hare wine label was first released in 2017, coinciding with the opening of the landmark cellar door, Rare Hare Wine & Food Store, at Jackalope Hotel.
